Every day, we are bombarded by advertisements promising instant results. It's attractive because we see images of the body that we want along with the superhuman performance associated with the product and the promise of results in 30-90 days.
We know, deep down that it's false advertising. Despite that, it's tempting and the idea sticks to our mind.
If you've signed up for a functional fitness training program like CrossFit, you have probably been told upfront that it takes several months to a couple of years to get the body that you want and depending on how much fat you need to lose, your mileage may vary. A couple of years may sound long but considering the alternatives, you are incredibly blessed in your situation.
You might be tempted by other parties seeking to get you to quit and try their program instead but please don't. Stay where you are for the next couple of years and your body will experience the transformation that you want to see.
The biggest challenge many people share about fitness is sticking to the routine. In this post we will talk about three ways you can stay motivated to stick to your functional fitness program.
- Remember the reasons why you got started.
Why did you get started in functional fitness? Are you trying to lose weight? Are you an athlete trying to improve your performance?
Everyone has different reasons why they started their fitness journey.
What did you tell yourself when you got started? What result did you want to get? Have you achieved your target already?
Let me tell you. You need to work some more. For best results it is recommended that you stick to working out three to five times a week consistently for a year and you'll see significant changes. You'll probably see some in the next few months but usually, after a year the results are dramatic.
- Remember the progress you've already made.
Sometimes getting up and going to the box is the challenge. Whenever you have a full day of work or other commitments, the workout is usually the first activity that gets cancelled. The common excuse your brain tells you is that it's not working out or the progress is too slow or it won't make much of a difference if you miss one workout.
Do you remember your first WOD? Do you recall how winded you were? Do you remember your second week when you told yourself that you're starting to get the hang of it? Do you remember each exercise that you can do now that you previously couldn't do?
Every win that you have is a result of going consistently. Progress will require just a little more consistency so celebrate your wins no matter how small. Celebrate the fact that you just went to the box. Celebrate cutting the workout time by a few seconds or by squeezing in a couple of more reps than you usually do.
A happy athlete will be able to push further than a serious athlete.
Let's be honest here. You are working out to look good and feel good and there's nothing wrong with that. Your body is what enables you to go after whatever it is that you want in life. You are working on taking better care of your body. You have every reason to celebrate that.
- Remember the people who made it possible.
Do you remember how the coach assisted you and your fellow athletes who cheered you on your early WOD's?
One of the best parts of joining a CrossFit box is being part of a community of athletes who will both challenge you and support you to give your best at every workout. Some will infect you with their competitive nature and while others will remind you that if they can do it, you can do it too.
A key to staying motivated is by spending time with them. Fitness is a lifetime commitment. That said, there are no shortcuts.
Hopefully these three reminders will keep you motivated whenever you experience self doubt.
