Dotseth’s Blog: Cruz and Johnson Was as Good as it Gets
I had a buddy who was a cook at a nice steakhouse in town. It used to drive him nuts if people put A1 or Heinz 57 on one of his steaks. Why mess with perfection? That had to be the thinking of some fans with the announcement featherweights and bantamweights would have their own divisions in the UFC. There were a small percentage of hardcore fans very happy with the original five weight divisions and not excited to welcome in two more champions.
That thinking was squashed this past Saturday night when Dominick Cruz defended his bantamweight title against Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson in a great 5 round fight. There were so many different twists and turns in this fight it was impossible to not watch from the edge of your seat.
How many times have we talked about the saying “Sometimes guys can do more for their career losing a close fight then winning a boring one”? That was again the case Saturday in regards to Johnson. At just 5’3 Johnson will be a star if he becomes the face of the new flyweight division.
Simon Cowell is wasting four hours a week looking for someone with the “X Factor” when all he had to do was spend 30 minutes watching the main event to find his guy. Johnson has great skills and is an excellent interview. Just what you need as more and more mainstream media members start doing stories on MMA.
There is no shame is losing to a guy as well rounded as Cruz, and Johnson is another guy I look forward to watching the next time he steps in the octagon.
It’s crazy to think Cruz continued to fight with a broken hand. The champ’s hands are starting to become an issue, and I hope Cruz
This week our office is headed to the UFC Expo in Houston. If you will be at the Expo on Friday or Saturday, I hope you will stop by booth 1421 to say hello. We will have some of the Clinch Gear athletes there signing autographs as well as doing two radio shows for Sirius/XM from the booth.
Dan Henderson needs your help. Two pairs of Dan’s fight shorts, including the pair he wore for his win over Fedor were stolen from his locker room as Dan met with the media after the fight. I can tell you from firsthand experience; security was very tight that night meaning only a limited amount of people would have had access to Dan’s locker room.
Dan told me today after the fight he went back to the locker room where he put his shorts in his bag. He then showed, got stitches and went to the press conference. Dan has kept the hand wraps, gloves and shorts from all of his fights for his kids, and wants these back.
We are hoping that you will keep your eye out on twitter, Craigslist, eBay etc to see if anyone is selling “Fight worn shorts” from Dan. In spite of what the ad may say, these were stolen and Dan would like them back.
If you help us get them back I promise Dan and Clinch Gear will do something cool for you as a small thanks for your help.
Thanks for checking in, we will see you in Houston!
